Unvented Hot Water Cylinder & Accumulator Installation: Improve Pressure & Hot Water

This week we installed a new 300-litre Kingspan Ultrasteel Unvented Hot Water Cylinder and 300-litre Challenger Water Accumulator in a third storey attic conversion. The objective was to store and supply hot and cold water within a large house while ensuring sufficient capacity of water throughout.

Quick Answer

An unvented hot water cylinder, such as the 300-litre Kingspan Ultrasteel, stores hot water directly from mains pressure, ensuring a consistent supply throughout a property without relying on gravity. A water accumulator, like the 300-litre Challenger, stores water under pressure to deliver a strong flow rate, even when multiple outlets are in use simultaneously. Together, these systems provide ample hot and cold water with excellent pressure and flow, making them ideal for large properties or those with high demand. This combination effectively resolves issues like insufficient hot water and poor flow rates, as demonstrated in a third-storey attic conversion case study.

The customer had previously been using a Vented Hot Water Cylinder (which was leaking) and an Unvented Hot Water Cylinder for his showers. There were also 2 cold water storage tanks in use commonly found on old plumbing systems.

The complaint was that there was never enough hot water to supply the whole house and the flow rate was quite poor, not to mention the leaking cylinder.

The 300-litre Kingspan Ultrasteel Unvented Hot Water Cylinder we installed will ensure that the property stores a sufficient supply of hot water. The 300-litre Challenger Water Accumulator will supply a good flow rate of water throughout the property, even with all outlets in use.

We’re happy to report the house has a great supply of hot and cold water throughout, with a great flow rate!

Frequently Asked Questions

1 What is an unvented hot water cylinder and how does it improve hot water supply?

An unvented hot water cylinder, like the Kingspan Ultrasteel installed in the case study, stores hot water directly from the mains pressure. This design ensures a sufficient and consistent supply of hot water throughout a property. It differs from older vented systems by not relying on a cold water storage tank and gravity, often leading to better pressure.

2 What is the purpose of a water accumulator in a plumbing system?

A water accumulator, such as the Challenger Water Accumulator mentioned in the case study, is designed to supply a good flow rate of water throughout a property. It stores water under pressure, releasing it when demand is high. This helps maintain consistent water pressure and flow, even when multiple outlets are in use simultaneously.

3 How can an unvented hot water cylinder and accumulator benefit a large property?

For a large property, this combination ensures both ample hot water and strong flow rates. The unvented cylinder provides a sufficient supply of hot water directly from the mains. The accumulator then maintains excellent water pressure throughout the property, even when all outlets are in use, resolving issues like poor flow and insufficient hot water.

4 What are common signs that indicate a need for a new hot water system upgrade?

Common signs include a leaking hot water cylinder, a consistent lack of sufficient hot water for the whole house, or poor water flow rate at taps and showers. The case study customer experienced these exact issues, which were resolved by upgrading to an unvented hot water cylinder and a water accumulator.
