Government ECO Boiler Scheme

Did you know, you might be able to apply for a grant to help pay for your new boiler?

Under the government ECO boiler scheme, homeowners who are eligible can have their old and inefficient boilers replaced for a substantial reduction in cost and depending on the unit, potentially completely free.

What is the grant called and why is it available?

The grant is known as the ‘Energy Company Obligation’ or ECO for short and has been set-up to help with combating climate change. Older boilers are terribly inefficient and detrimental to the environment. Therefore, to help remove these older units, energy companies alongside the government are working to fund the switch for those who would not be able to afford it.

The current ECO scheme is known as ECO3 and has been in place since December 2018. ECO1, ECO2 and ECO2t have now finished.

Who is eligible for the ECO boiler scheme?

If you are in receipt of at least one government benefit, such as Tax Credit, Income Support, DSA (Disability Living Allowance), ESA (Employment and Support Allowance), JSA (Job Seeker’s Allowance), PIP (Personal Independence Payment), or Universal Credit to name a few, then you will be eligible for the ECO boiler scheme.

There are two main caveats though. Firstly, you must be a homeowner with an existing mains gas supply, and secondly, your boiler must be deemed in-efficient. If you already have a newish boiler, then you will not be able to get a grant to have it replaced. Similarly, if you have already received a boiler grant in the past you will not be able to claim again.

How do I check eligibility for the ECO grant?

You can check for eligibility by entering your details on the Boiler Grants website. You will be asked a series of questions regarding your property to ascertain eligibility as well as which support you are currently in receipt of.
