Top marks for Aren! Brian and Cameron attended and were great! They were fast, efficient, and punctual. They removed an ancient unused iron heating unit and two huge storage tanks, cutting away and safely removing the large heavy items. It was a tough and messy job, but Brian and Cameron were diligent, courteous, and clear on what they were doing throughout. They also did a great job tidying up as they worked. I contacted loads of local heating and plumbing companies, but Aren (via Nick) were the most responsive, competitive, and had the best ratings - very pleased with the result, and I'll definitely be using them again for future work.

Top job by Aren - booking them for a radiator upgrade was totally easy via WhatsApp, we got honest unbiased advice which gave us full confidence in the firm and discovered we could supply a few of the needed parts ourselves saving us money overall. 😁 The two gents who attended were cheerful, got on with the job, kept within the quoted time and kept us informed throughout the whole process. Couldn't have asked for anything more and absolutely will be using Aren again.

FAQ

Boiler leaks

A problem with an internal component of the boiler, such as with the pressure valve or the pump seal, is typically the source of a leak in the boiler. If the leak is coming from your system’s pressure relief valve, it is probable that the pressure in your system has built up to an unsafe level. In the event that the leak is the result of an issue with the pump seal, the seal may have become worn out.

Corrosion may be the culprit behind a leak that has appeared in the area surrounding the pipes in your system. There’s also a possibility that there was anything wrong with the manner that your system was setup. For assistance in determining the cause of and a solution to this problem, we advise that you seek the advice of one of our qualified engineers. If the leak was caused by a very major malfunction, our engineer may suggest that you replace the boiler with a new one as a solution to the problem.

Low boiler pressure

If the pressure in your boiler is too low, you should be able to tell by looking at the pressure gauge that is built right into the appliance. The pressure in your boiler ought to be set at the 1.5 bar, if at all possible. If it is lower than 1, the boiler that you have will not be able to work correctly.

Issues such as a leak in the system, radiators that have been recently bled for air, or a component or seal that has failed can all contribute to low boiler pressure. In order to assist in determining the nature of the problem, you may begin by searching for obvious indications of a leak; however, you should not attempt to remove any casings from the boiler. If you find a leak, we strongly suggest that you get in touch with one of our Gas Safe experts. If you are unable to find a leak, you might want to attempt repressurising your boiler if you are confident in your ability to do so.

No heating or hot water

There may be a number of underlying problems that cause a malfunctioning boiler to have no hot water or heat and to completely “lock out.”

This might involve a malfunctioning thermostat, a diverter valve, frozen pipes, a defective pilot light, or even a pressure issue with the boiler.

The best course of action to take if your central heating won’t turn on is to determine whether the problem is due to a pressure issue. You may check your boiler’s pressure gauge to see if you have low pressure if it is below 1 and outside of the normal range (often coloured green).

If the pressure appears to be normal and there is no evident explanation for the problem, you will need to get in touch with the manufacturer of the boiler for more assistance.

A problem with the diverter valve, the diaphragm, or any other internal component will require an investigation, and if necessary, repair, by one of our Gas Safe Engineers. They will be able to assist you in making the necessary repairs.

Frozen Condensate Pipe

This problem is more widespread during the winter months. The condensate from your boiler is sent to the outside drain via the condensate line in your system. Freezing condensate is a typical problem during the colder winter months and can cause the boiler to lock out.

When anything like this occurs, a corresponding fault code will often be shown on the interface of the boiler, indicating that a frozen condensate pipe has occurred.

When the condensate pipe is situated on the exterior of the house, where it is subjected to low temperatures and is therefore more likely to freeze, this is a typical problem that arises.

When the condensate pipe is situated on the exterior of the house, where it is subjected to low temperatures and is therefore more likely to freeze, this is a typical problem that arises.

The solution to this problem is typically as simple as thawing the contents of the pipe, which is frozen solid. Insulating the pipe and having an engineer move it if it was put outside are both good ideas for long-term preventative strategies. If the pipe was installed outside, it is also a good idea to insulate it. To have the best results, the pipe should go through as much of the home’s interior as it safely can.

Radiator faults

Do you discover that some of the radiators do not become as hot as they used to when you turn them on? Radiators that are chilly at the bottom, radiators that have cold patches and radiators that distribute heat unevenly are often the outcomes of having too much air in the radiators or sludge that has built up in the radiators.

If there is too much air inside of your radiators, you may fix the problem by bleeding your radiators. This is a rather straightforward procedure, but one that can become somewhat messy.

In the event that bleeding your radiators does not cure the problem, sludge is most likely to blame. Over the course of time, rust and filth will inevitably accumulate inside the water that is being heated, which will eventually lead to the production of a viscous, brown substance that is known as sludge.

The removal of sludge can be accomplished through the use of either a power flush or a chemical flush. These flushes give your heating system and boiler essentially a deep cleaning by utilising high pressure and a combination of chemicals. This helps to eliminate residues and sludge that may have accumulated over time.

Boiler failing to respond with the thermostat

Most people use the thermostat to regulate the heating schedule and temperature of their central boiler, so when it stops working, it may be a huge inconvenience.

If your boiler does not respond in any way to the temperature set on the thermostat, the controls may either be faulty or very old. However, before you get to the conclusion that it is broken, there are a few tests that you should do on it.

For instance, consider changing the batteries (simple, I know, but a very typical error!). Additionally, you may try moving the appliance closer to the boiler and looking for any interference that might be causing a problem. If the issue with your thermostat doesn’t go away, consult the manual for suggestions or ask the manufacturer for assistance.

Strange noises, whistling or banging

Your boiler’s sudden variations in the sorts of noises it makes might be an indication of an underlying issue.

Boiler sounds can frequently be caused by a buildup of limescale. The heat exchanger can overheat as a result of limescale buildup, which can result in the creation of steam and bubbling, which produces the well-known whistling sound known as kettling.

Fortunately, these problems may be addressed rather quickly with routine boiler maintenance or when they arise.

Our engineer can clean your system using chemicals and high pressure during your yearly service or as needed to enhance water quality and instal a limescale inhibitor to assist prevent the buildup of mineral deposits.

Pilot light repeatedly goes out

It is possible that older boilers have a pilot light that is always on and has to be kept lit in order to ignite the bigger burner that is contained within the boiler. If this light is continually turning out, there may be a problem with the thermocouple that is preventing the gas supply from being delivered. There is also the possibility that the light was extinguished because of a buildup of deposits or a draught.

If you feel confident enough to do so, you can give yourself a go at reigniting the flame of the pilot light. Please ensure that you are following the steps outlined in your boiler handbook. Before you proceed, you need to check to see that your gas stopcock is turned on and that there are no problems with your gas supply. You can do this by seeing how the other gas appliances in your home function. For assistance in resolving this problem, we advise getting in touch with one of our Gas Safe engineers.

The boiler won't start (no power)

If your boiler won’t switch on, the first thing you need to do is examine the functionality of the other appliances and power sources in your home to see if there is a problem with your boiler. If they are, you should examine the fuse box to determine if any of the switches have failed or been tripped. We suggest getting in touch with one of our Gas Safe engineers if you are still unable to determine the origin of the problem.

There may be a problem with the pressure in the system or a blockage that is preventing the boiler from staying on. If the pressure gauge shows that your system is below 1, you should increase the boiler’s pressure.

Boiler breakdown

All of the aforementioned problems can eventually result in a full boiler breakdown if they are not resolved. In that situation, you want to get in touch with a Gas Safe qualified engineer right once.

Boilers can break down irreparably due to age and inefficiency as well. In order to provide you with the necessary heating and hot water, we advise a boiler replacement for any outdated, inefficient boilers. You could dramatically reduce your energy costs by installing a brand-new, contemporary, and energy-efficient boiler.
