The idea that it’s cheaper to leave the heating on low all day is just a myth.

It was often thought and assumed that it was more economical to keep your heating on albeit at a low temperature all the time – even when not at home. There were concerns that firing it up every time you got home and needed it cost more as was needing to heat the whole home from scratch each time. This has now been debunked by a range of experts including those at the Energy Saving Trust.

Money saving expert, Martin Lewis has revealed how to use your central heating effectively and get the best value out of it.

  1. Only turn the heating on when you need it. It doesn’t take long with modern boilers to heat up the water and warm your home again.
  2. Have a timer installed to handle your thermostat. It helps save money by turning off the boiler when it reaches your desired temperature.

The Energy Saving Trust adds that if you’re keeping the heating on all day you’re losing energy all day, so it’s better to heat your home only when you need it.

If you are struggling to afford your heating bills, you can apply for a ‘Cold Weather Payment’ to help when the outside temperature falls to freezing and can also obtain the ‘Warm Home Discount Scheme’ or a ‘Winter Fuel Payment’ to help minimise your bills further.

Despite the above advice on turning your central heating off when not in use being applicable to most people – those who live in places which are particularly damp and cold may be best off keeping the heating on low. There are some experts who say that having the heating on constantly with all the radiators on and the boiler down can work to reduce dampness as it reduces condensation, which when the heating is turned off collects within the walls and can help conduct heat outside the home.
