Common Central Heating and Radiator Problems: What’s Going Wrong and How to Fix It

Your central heating system does a lot of heavy lifting , especially when the temperature drops and all you want is a warm, comfortable home. But when something goes wrong, it can quickly go from cosy to cold.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through some of the most common issues with central heating systems and radiators. Whether your boiler’s acting up, the radiators are lukewarm, or the whole system is making strange noises, we’ll help you get to the bottom of it and explain when it’s best to call in the experts. In some cases, solutions such as radiator power flushing, boiler chemical flushing, or understanding powerflush vs chemical flush can make a big difference.

No Heat Coming Through?

The issue: You’ve turned the heating on, but there’s no warmth at all.

Things to check:

  • Thermostat settings – Make sure it’s set to “heat” and that the temperature is high enough to kick the boiler into action.
  • Batteries – If your thermostat uses batteries, flat ones can stop it from communicating with the boiler.
  • Power supply – Check the fuse box to see if a circuit breaker has tripped.
  • Boiler ignition – For gas boilers, the pilot light might need reigniting. Newer boilers might display a fault code if something’s wrong.

If you’ve checked all the above and still no joy, the fault might lie inside the boiler itself , and that’s where we come in.

Some Rooms Are Toasty, Others Freezing

The issue: One or two rooms warm up nicely, but the rest feel like an icebox.

What’s going on?
This often comes down to air in the system, blocked radiators, or a need for balancing.

How to fix it:

  • Bleed your radiators – Trapped air rises to the top of radiators and stops hot water from circulating properly. Use a radiator key to gently release it.
  • Look for obstructions – Make sure furniture or curtains aren’t blocking radiators or preventing warm air from circulating.
  • Balance your system – This involves tweaking the flow of water to each radiator so that heat is distributed more evenly. It’s a bit fiddly but can make a big difference. If in doubt, we’re happy to do it for you.

Radiators Cold at the Top or Bottom

This one’s a classic.

  • Cold at the top? Air has likely risen and settled inside the radiator , a quick bleed should sort it.
  • Cold at the bottom? That’s usually down to sludge build-up. Over time, rust and debris collect at the base and stop water flowing freely.

A build-up like that can put extra strain on your boiler, reduce efficiency, and cost you more to run. A chemical flush can help clear it out and bring your system back to life.

Strange Noises Coming from the Boiler or Radiators

The issue: Banging, gurgling, tapping , whatever the sound, it’s not normal.

What it could be:

  • Air pockets – Gurgling or bubbling sounds often come from air in the pipes or radiators.
  • Limescale – In hard water areas (like many parts of London), limescale can build up inside the boiler and cause kettling , a whistling or banging sound.
  • Loose parts – Pipes or valves might be rattling slightly if they’ve worked loose over time.

How to approach it:

  • Try bleeding the radiators to release air.
  • Check your boiler’s pressure and top it up if needed.
  • If the noises persist, especially loud bangs or constant kettling, give us a call. A deeper clean or scale-reduction treatment may be needed.

A Radiator That Won’t Heat Up

The issue: One radiator stays stone cold, even though others are working fine.

Start with this:

  • Make sure both radiator valves are fully open.
  • Try bleeding the radiator , even if it doesn’t feel warm at all.
  • Shut off all other radiators in the house and see if the cold one springs to life , this can help push hot water through stubborn blockages.

If that works, your system might need balancing. If it doesn’t, there may be an issue with the pump or a blockage in the pipework.

Low Boiler Pressure

The issue: Your boiler shows a pressure warning or the needle is below 1 bar.

What you can do:

  • Locate the pressure gauge (usually on the front of the boiler).
  • If it’s below the recommended level, you may need to top it up via the filling loop (check your boiler’s manual first).
  • Don’t overdo it , too much pressure can cause other issues.

If you’re unsure, or if the pressure keeps dropping repeatedly, it’s best to let us take a look.

Your Thermostat Isn’t Playing Ball

The issue: You’ve set a temperature, but your home doesn’t seem to respond.

Things to try:

  • Location matters – If your thermostat is near a heat source (like a lamp or oven), it might misread the room temperature.
  • Batteries – Swap them out just in case.
  • Age – Old thermostats can drift over time and may need recalibrating or replacing.

If you’re considering an upgrade, smart thermostats give you much more control and can help you save energy over time.

Valve Problems You Might Not Notice

Radiator valves can sometimes seize up if they’ve not been used in a while , especially thermostatic ones (TRVs). If one radiator seems stuck on or off, try gently turning the valve head back and forth. If it’s not budging, it may need replacing.

Prevention is Better Than Repair

An annual boiler service can prevent many of these issues from cropping up in the first place. It’s a bit like an MOT for your heating system , it keeps everything in good working order and can help catch problems before they get worse (and more expensive).
